CDH Digital Fellowship Opportunity: November 8th Deadline

The Center for Digital Humanities is delighted to announce our Digital Fellows Program.

The Digital Humanities Fellows Program seeks applications from advanced graduate students and faculty in the digital humanities with innovative ideas to explore in concert with the Center for Digital Humanities at the University of South Carolina.

The intent of the program is to reward faculty and graduate students exploring innovations in the digital humanities by providing support to applicants, including, but not limited to: server space and customized programming as well as consultation on project objectives, design, and management; software selection; and other crucial components of any digital humanities project.

We anticipate that most fellows will come from the College of Arts and Sciences, but we welcome proposals for eligible humanities projects from any part of the University. Faculty and graduate students from all University of South Carolina campuses are eligible to apply. Graduate students must be enrolled in a terminal degree program (M.A., M.F.A, M.S., Ph.D. etc.).

The selected Fellows will receive a budget of $5,000 for faculty fellows and $2500 for graduate student fellows, access to computer equipment and software in the Center, technical support from highly trained staff, and ten hours per week of Center staff members' time on the project. Fellows are expected to be in-residence throughout the duration of their fellowship and will be provided with space in Center facilities to conduct their work.

Fellows may wish to secure a course release with money provided by the Center and to match that with a further course release provided by their home departments. Ideally, fellows will be relieved of at least one course of their teaching responsibilities during the fellowship period.

By the end of the fellowship, we expect fellows to have completed the following: 1) completed all consultations with CDH staff (development, media, and technical); 2) generated a strategic development plan and created documentation for the project (this may be a website, white paper, and/or publicity materials) and 3) begun work on the appropriate technical platforms for the project with significant progress towards the completion of a prototype or pilot platform for the project.

After the fellowship period, projects are expected to be considering external grants or other support to extend the work completed during the fellowship.
We encourage fellows to be resourceful in gathering support and managing research time so as to make possible the initial development of an ambitious project. We encourage potential applicants to also consider applying for a Provost's Internal Humanities Grant (http://www.sc.edu/provost/faculty/grants/) which can be held in tandem with a CDH Digital Fellowship.

A committee appointed by the Director of CDH judges applications and consideration will be given to the extent to which digital technologies are a part of the research plan and/or the pedagogical methodology being developed. Proposals should specify why CDH would be crucial to the project’s development. To apply, applicants should provide:

  • a current short c.v.
  • a one-paragraph abstract of the proposal
  • the proposal itself, which should be no longer than four pages and which should specifically address the following points:
    • the project that you will work on if awarded the fellowship at CDH
    • how the use of advanced technology would help achieve your research goals and contribute to the intellectual outcome
    • hardware and software needs
    • a detailed timetable or work plan for duration of the fellowship
    • what other funding sources you have or will pursue in relation to the project
  • Faculty Applications should supply a supporting letter from your Chair that specifically addresses course-release and/or required time commitments for the duration of the fellowship.
  • Graduate Student Applicants should also supply a supporting letter from their advisor that addresses the relationship of the project to the students’ thesis/dissertation and outlines how the applicants’ advisor will support the students’ effort for the duration of the project.

All materials should be sent to Jennifer Guiliano, Associate Director at CDH, via email by MONDAY, NOVEMBER 8th in either .doc or .pdf format. Please direct all application materials and questions to jenguiliano@gmail.com with DIGITAL FELLOWS in the subject line.

We encourage applicants to consult with CDH staff regarding their applications. Please email Jennifer Guiliano at jenguiliano@gmail.com or call 803-777-2105 to arrange for a fellowship application consultation.

Announcements of Fellows will be made by December 15, 2010. The Competition closes MONDAY, NOVEMBER 8th at 5 pm Eastern.
